Why are these supplements important?
Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that is very important for memory formation. A deficiency in acetylcholine leads to difficulty forming and recalling memories and can lead to delusions and confusion. This neurotransmitter is significantly decreased in people with Dementia. One of the main conventional prescription medications for treating Alzheimer’s Disease is Aricept (Donepezil) but it comes with many side effects. The primary mechanism of Aricept is to increase acetylcholine in the brain by preventing enzymes that break it down. Several of the following supplements are focused on naturally increasing acetylcholine in the brain.
There is also significant evidence to support that a breakdown in the mitochondria of the cell leads to significant neuronal damage in many diseases including Dementia. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are also key components that lead to death of neurons.
The following supplements are focused on increasing acetylcholine, restoring and maintaining mitochondrial support leading to proper cell function, increasing energy, preventing oxidative stress, decreasing inflammation and promoting neuronal (brain cell) growth.

Citicoline - Increases choline stores which is a precursor to the biosynthesis of acetylcholine. Choline must be readily available in the body to synthesize acetylcholine. Glutamate is an important excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain but must be kept in balance. Too much glutamate is associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s. Citicoline decreases glutamate levels in the brain which in turn offers protection against ischemic neurotoxicity. It also increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is how energy is made by the body. It increases glucose metabolism in the brain and improves cerebral blood flow. Citicoline has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms and it supports neuronal growth and maintenance which supports memory formation.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid 9 (R-lipoic acid) - Antioxidant and Antiinflammatory. It helps to prevent certain kinds of cell damage in the body and reduces inflammation. It helps break down carbs and makes energy for organs in the body and may protect brain cells from conditions such as stroke and multiple sclerosis. Oxidative stress and neuronal energy depletion are characteristic biochemical hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) so aiding these pathways in the brain is neuroprotective against AD.
Acetyl- L- Carnitine - Antioxidant and increases utilization of nerve growth factor which builds brain cells. Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine are used to help the body turn fat into energy. It is important for heart and brain function, muscle movement, and many other body processes. It decreases insulin resistance which helps the body utilize glucose as a food source for the brain. Carnitine levels also decrease significantly as we age. Acetyl L-Carnitine is one of the most researched brain nutrients and has been shown to quickly enhance mental focus and energy. Its structure is also similar to acetylcholine and therefore acetyl L-carnitine can stimulate acetylcholine receptors in the brain to promote better uptake of this very important neurotransmitter.
N- Acetylcysteine (NAC) - The body is constantly being exposed to toxins every day which leads to damage to the body, brain, and other vital organs such as the liver or kidneys. Glutathione is the body’s natural master antioxidant and is readily used to protect the body from toxic exposure damage. Taking glutathione as a supplement is not very bioavailable, meaning it is not readily absorbed or used by the body. NAC is used by the body to naturally make glutathione and NAC supplementation is able to reliably increase glutathione concentrations in cells specifically and leads to cell repair from oxidative stress. Protecting cells and preventing toxic insults are critical for brain health.
Nicotinamide riboside(NR) - NR is a precursor and building block for NAD+ (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). NAD+ is a very important molecule that maintains mitochondrial cellular health and DNA integrity. It fortifies cells and ensures proper cell function which helps protect our bodies from aging and disease. NAD + naturally falls with age leading to chronic illness, vision loss, and age related diseases such as Dementia. NAD+ also helps convert food to energy and regulates our circadian rhythm, which controls our body’s sleep/wake cycle. Adequate sleep is how the body repairs itself and removes toxins which is critical to brain health.
- With Resveratrol - works synergistically with NR to increase NAD+ and work better than just taking NR alone. This promotes an improved healthy response to oxidative stress and inflammation and supports the body’s normal cellular regeneration and repair. It also helps to modulate and reduce blood pressure.
CoQ-10 (Ubiquinol) - CoQ10 occurs naturally in the body- most young people have enough naturally but it decreases with age and some medical conditions. CoQ10 is key to supporting mitochondrial function and energy production. It acts as an antioxidant, which protects cells from damage and plays an important part in cellular metabolism.
- With PQQ- (Pyrroloquinoline quinone) - PQQ works synergistically with CoQ10 to support mitochondrial function and increase mitochondrial number. It also works with glutathione in the antioxidative cycle protecting cells from free radicals.
Omega 3: DHA and EPA - Important fatty acids that are anti-inflammatory. They additionally help to balance the high level of Omega 6 fatty acids that are in the standard American diet, which decreases oxidative stress. They also promote cognition, memory, and other normal brain functions.
Quercetin - Regulates neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, dopamine, and serotonin. It is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It is neuroprotective and it inhibits the fibril formation of amyloid-beta proteins. It easily crosses the blood brain barrier and decreases oxidative stress on the hippocampus, which is the memory center of the brain. It is also very important for immune health because it works as an antiviral by inhibiting the initial stages of virus infection, preventing a virus from replicating. Because viruses often end up in the brain, preventing infection is very beneficial for brain health.
MethylAssist - B vitamins (B6, 9, 12) B vitamins are very important for brain health. Cellular dysfunction and poor methylation leads to an increase in homocysteine which can further damage cells. This supplement provides critical B vitamins leading to improved cellular health, more effective methylation and decreased homocysteine levels. This form of B vitamins is already processed thus bypassing the MTHFR gene, therefore it is also appropriate for people with an MTHFR mutation.
Vitamin D - Regulates enzymes in the brain and the cerebrospinal fluid that are involved in neurotransmitter synthesis and nerve growth. Vitamin D protects neurons, reduces inflammation and helps to regulate the immune system. Vitamin D is low in many people with chronic illness.
Magnesium - Magnesium is utilized by almost every cell in the body. The brain, heart and muscles rely heavily on magnesium to function. It is required for breaking down glucose for energy production, protein synthesis, as well as muscle and nerve function. Magnesium also has a calming effect on the brain due to the presence of glycine. It can help relieve anxiety and promote better sleep. Deficiency can cause damage to nerve cells, which can lead to depression and poor cognition. The best and most bioavailable forms of Magnesium with the least amount of side effects are glycinate, malate, and L-threonate. L-threonate is a newer form of Magnesium and easily crosses the blood brain barrier. Magnesium is a critical electrolyte required for brain health.
Probiotics - Increasing research is showing there is a significant gut-brain connection. If the gut is not healthy then it allows toxins to easily seep through to the bloodstream and ultimately end up in the brain. Maintaining a healthy gut biome is critical for protecting the brain and promoting neuronal health.
ONE Multivitamin- Many important vitamins are in this supplement which creates a basic foundation for brain health.
